12 ON YOUR SIDELINE Best Practice

Executive Order Sixth Amended Sixty-Seven from the Governor of Virginia 11.13.2020
13. Recreational Sports Indoor and outdoor recreational sports activities are permitted, provided participants and organizers of recreational sports activities comply with the following requirements: a. The total number of spectators cannot exceed the lesser of 30% of the occupancy load of the certificate of occupancy for the venue, if applicable, or 25 spectators per field. Races or marathons may have up to 250 participants, provided staggered starts separate runners into groups of 25 or less.

From the Virginia Department of Health:
  • All participants and spectators should maintain at least 6 feet of physical distance to the greatest extent possible.  Exercise and activities like cheering and shouting increase respiration and can increase the risk of transmitting COVID-19 in recreational sports settings and therefore may benefit from additional distancing (e.g. 10 feet).  Spectators and athletes who are not actively playing should sit at least six feet apart.  Sports that can be modified to increase the distance between participants in practice or in play are encouraged.
  • All participants and spectators should wear masks whenever possible.  Wearing masks is especially important in settings where it is difficult to stay physically distant from other people.  Masks should be worn when arriving to or departing from an athletic facility/event, and on the sidelines.  Wearing masks during physical activity may be considered.  Some people may have a difficult time wearing a mask while exercising or playing a sport, and decisions to wear masks during play should be made on a case-by-case basis.  Considerations may include the intensity of the sport, the likelihood of the mask getting caught on equipment or getting wet, and the individual athlete.
